How to Care for a Wooden Wedding Ring

Choosing a wooden wedding band is a beautiful, deeply personal statement. Warm, organic, and entirely unique, a wood ring carries a natural story and a weightless comfort that traditional metal bands simply cannot match.

But because wood is a natural, living material, caring for a wood ring requires slightly different habits than caring for a gold or platinum band.

While traditional metals can be polished with harsh jewelry cleaners, a wooden ring relies on a specialized protective finish to stay safe from moisture and wear. Knowing how to maintain, clean, and protect this finish is the secret to keeping your ring looking brand new for decades.

At Ring & Grove, we handcraft our rings in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, using our specialized bentwood method and seal them in a medical-grade waterproof finish. In this ultimate care guide, we’ll share our top professional tips on how to clean, protect, and maintain your wooden wedding band.

Thanks to our proprietary waterproof resin finish, which completely penetrates and seals the wood fibers under pressure, your Ring & Grove band is highly resilient. However, to preserve the glass-smooth, high-gloss shine, follow these daily wear guidelines:

Handwashing: Washing your hands normally with mild soap and warm water is 100% safe. Daily Showers: Shampoos and body washes will not harm the ring. Hand Sanitizer: Our medical-grade finish is fully resistant to alcohol-based hand rubs, making it perfect for doctors and nurses. Gym Workouts & Sweat: Perspiration and body oils will not erode the resin coating.

Prolonged Swimming (Pools & Saltwater): While a brief accidental dip is fine, regular, prolonged exposure to chlorinated pool chemicals or abrasive saltwater can slowly dull the glossy finish. Heavy Dishwashing: Harsh dish detergents contain strong degreasers that can slowly wear away the finish over several years. Heavy Weightlifting: Gripping knurled steel barbells directly against your wood ring under heavy loads can cause minor surface scratches. (Tip: Wear gym gloves or loop the ring onto a necklace chain during lifting!).

Hot Tubs and Saunas: High heat combined with chemical-heavy water is highly destructive. The extreme heat can cause the wood, metal inlays, and resin to expand at slightly different rates, which can compromise the hermetic seal and lead to foggy moisture bubbles forming under the finish. Harsh Chemical Solvents: Always remove your ring before working with industrial cleaners, bleach, paint thinners, or acetone (nail polish remover). These solvents will chemically dissolve the protective resin shell.

Cleaning a wood ring is incredibly simple and requires no expensive, commercial jewelry cleaners (which can actually damage the finish!).

1. Rinse the ring under warm tap water. 2. Apply a drop of mild, non-abrasive hand soap or dish soap. 3. Gently rub the ring with your fingers or a soft microfiber cloth to remove any grease, dirt, or gym chalk. (Never use a stiff toothbrush or abrasive scrubbing pad!). 4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. 5. Pat the ring dry with a soft towel.

Just like a polished gold or platinum ring develops minor surface scuffs over years of active wear, the protective finish of your wood ring can become slightly dull or scuffed.

The major benefit of a wood ring is that it can be easily refinished to look brand new!

If your Ring & Grove band loses its luster, develops deep scratches, or if you accidentally expose it to a harsh solvent, don't worry. We offer a dedicated workshop refinishing program: You can ship your ring back to our Bobcaygeon workshop. Our artisans will gently sand away surface scuffs and apply a fresh, brand-new, glass-smooth medical-grade waterproof seal. Your ring will be shipped back to you looking exactly as it did on your wedding day!

No. Commercial metal jewelry cleaners contain harsh acids and abrasives designed to strip tarnish off metals. These chemicals will erode and damage the protective resin coating on your wood ring. Only clean your ring with mild soap and warm water.

If you suffer a deep scratch that cuts completely through the protective resin barrier, moisture can seep under the finish, causing the wood to expand or dark spots to form. If you notice a deep scratch or chip, remove your ring and contact our workshop immediately so we can refinish and reseal it for you.

Caring for a wooden wedding band doesn't have to be stressful. By practicing simple, mindful daily habits, your Ring & Grove bentwood band will remain a beautiful, warm, and highly comfortable symbol of your love for a lifetime.
