Today, we replicate this ancient art using pattern-welding: 1. We take two or more different alloys of stainless steel. 2. We heat them to white-hot temperatures and forge-weld them together under immense pressure. 3. The steel is folded, twisted, and hammered multiple times, creating hundreds of distinct layers. 4. Finally, we acid-etch the ring. The acid reacts differently to the different steel alloys, revealing the stunning, high-contrast, flowing wave patterns.
