Is a Wooden Wedding Band Good for Swimming? What You Need to Know

When you fall in love with the warm, organic aesthetic of a wooden wedding band, one of the first practical questions that comes to mind is: "Can it get wet?"

After all, water is an inescapable part of daily life. Between washing your hands, taking showers, washing dishes, sweating at the gym, and swimming in pools or the ocean, your wedding ring is bound to come into contact with moisture.

Traditional metal rings—like gold or platinum—handle water effortlessly. But we all know what happens to raw timber when it gets soaked: it swells, warps, and eventually rots or cracks.

Does that mean you have to leave your beautiful wood wedding band behind every time you head to the beach or the pool?

At Ring & Grove, we construct our rings in Bobcaygeon, Ontario using a specialized waterproof sealant. In this comprehensive guide, we will break down the science of wood ring water resistance, answer whether you can swim with a wood band, and provide essential best practices to keep your ring looking pristine for a lifetime.

A raw, untreated wood ring would indeed be ruined by a single shower. That is why at Ring & Grove, we do not use cheap waxes or furniture oils to finish our rings.

Instead, every single ring is completely encapsulated in a proprietary, medical-grade, waterproof resin coating.

Deep Penetration: Our liquid resin completely penetrates the outer wood fibers of our continuous-grain bentwood layers under pressure, replacing any microscopic air pockets in the wood with solid, waterproof polymer. Hermetic Seal: Once cured, the resin creates a rock-hard, glass-smooth shell around the wood. This barrier prevents liquid water, humidity, and sweat from ever touching the actual wood fibers. Chemical Stability: The cured resin is chemically inert, meaning it is highly resistant to alcohol-based hand sanitizers, soaps, and body oils.

Because of this industrial-strength barrier, your Ring & Grove band is fully waterproof under normal daily conditions.

To help you navigate daily life with your wood band, we’ve broken down the most common wet scenarios into safety zones:

Handwashing: Washing your hands with warm water and standard hand soap is 100% safe. Showering: Daily showers will not harm the ring. Rain and Weather: Rain, snow, and winter humidity are completely fine. Sweating & Working Out: Perspiration is perfectly safe and will not erode the resin coating. Hand Sanitizer: Our medical-grade finish is fully resistant to alcohol-based hand sanitizers, making it perfect for doctors and nurses.

Dishwashing: While the water won’t hurt the wood, harsh dish detergents contain abrasive chemicals and degreasers that can slowly dull the high-gloss shine of the protective coating over several years. Daily Swimming (Pools & Chlorine): Chlorine is a powerful bleaching agent. While a brief accidental swim in a pool is fine, regular, prolonged exposure to chlorinated pool water can slowly erode the glossy polish of the protective finish. Ocean Swimming (Saltwater): Saltwater acts as a mild abrasive. The salt crystals can cause microscopic scratches in the glossy finish, making it look dull over time. Additionally, cold water causes your fingers to temporarily shrink, increasing the risk of your ring slipping off and being lost in the ocean!

Hot Tubs and Saunas: High heat combined with chemical-heavy water (chlorine/bromine) is the worst environment for a wood ring. The extreme heat can cause the wood, metal inlays, and resin to expand at slightly different rates, which can compromise the hermetic seal and lead to foggy moisture bubbles forming under the finish. Harsh Chemical Solvents: Always remove your ring before working with industrial cleaners, bleach, paint thinners, or acetone (nail polish remover). These solvents will chemically dissolve the protective resin shell.

If you are an active surfer, swimmer, or diver, you can still absolutely own and love a wood wedding band! Just follow these three simple habits:

1. The Swim Necklace Trick: If you are heading into the ocean or a deep pool, slip your wood ring onto a secure sterling silver or titanium necklace chain. This keeps the ring completely safe, close to your chest, and prevents it from slipping off your finger in cold water. 2. Rinse with Fresh Water: If you do wear your ring during a brief swim in the ocean or pool, always rinse your hand and ring thoroughly with clean, fresh tap water afterward to remove any chlorine or salt residue. 3. Dry Comfortably: After getting your hands wet, gently dry your hand and the ring with a towel to prevent moisture from sitting trapped against your skin.

If your ring suffers a deep scratch that cuts through the protective resin barrier, moisture can get trapped underneath, causing the wood to swell or dark spots to form. If you notice any chips, deep scratches, or cloudiness in your Ring & Grove band, contact our workshop immediately. We offer low-cost refinishing and replacement programs to restore your ring to a glass-smooth, waterproof shine.

Yes! Denser, closed-cell hardwoods like Santos Rosewood, African Ebony, and reclaimed White Oak (traditionally used for shipbuilding and whiskey barrels because of its closed cellular structure) are naturally highly water-resistant and offer the best long-term durability.

Your wedding ring should adapt to your life, not make you worry. With Ring & Grove’s premium bentwood construction and medical-grade waterproof seal, you can wear a piece of natural art that stands up to your daily routine.
